CLINICAL PROFILES, ASSESSMENT AND OUTCOMES IN LATE TALKERS

Children with early language delay are identified on the bases of clinical profiles including restricted expressive vocabulary around the age of 2 years as well as limited phonetic and phonological output. Across a plethora of studies across the globe, an estimated prevalence of early language delay ranges from 15-20% (Rescorla & Dale, 2013).  Late Takers (LTs) present a challenge to the clinical and research fields form many reasons related to variability and diversity of clinical profiles, sparsity of reliable assessment tools but mostly the existence of variable prognostic characteristics. Keeping in mind that early language delay is not always “an innocent” communication characteristic, clinician should be in a position to implement evidence-based guidelines and sensitive tools in the management and prediction of later language outcomes in these populations. The current workshop presents information related to the clinical profiles, differential diagnosis and management of children with early language delay. A series of case studies are presented and a number of evidence-based intervention/management protocols are discussed.
